Election day in Milton brought a few new faces to the council table but some residents are not happy with the voter turnout.

The town re-elected Canada’s longest-serving mayor, Gordon Krantz, who narrowly edged out competitor Zee Hamid’s 10,396 votes with 11,391 votes capturing 49.51 per cent.

Town council saw some changes with new councillors elected in Wards 3 and 4.

The results might have looked different if more people came out to vote.

Only 23,298 of the 80,367 eligible voters came out to vote, according to the 2022 Town of Milton municipal election results. That’s less than 30 per cent voter turnout.

And down from 2018 when 23,139 out of 62,521 voted — 37 per cent of eligible voters.

Many people expressed disappointment on the community Facebook group Milton Talk.

“Sadly there aren’t enough people who care about the future,” one person wrote.

Mayoral candidate Zee Hamid also commented that he was “very disappointed with the abysmal turnout…” But added that he is happy to see the incoming council has more diversity and three female councillors.

Unfortunately, voter turn out for municipal elections in other communities was similar. In nearby Oakville, only 28.3 per cent of eligible voters came out. The City of Hamilton is slightly higher at 35.38 per cent. And Brampton was much lower at only 24.56 per cent.
