Boxing Day in Mississauga and what’s open and closed on December 26 and 27

It’s called Boxing Day because, starting in medieval Britain, servants had a day off and would receive a gift box.

This year, Boxing Day, Dec. 26, falls on a Monday. However, because Dec. 26 will be given as a day off for many as the Christmas Day holiday, Tuesday Dec. 27 will then see many businesses and other organizations either closed or operating on Boxing Day hours.

Bottom line: no matter where you’re looking to go on Dec. 27, call ahead or check online before heading anywhere. 

Here’s what’s open and closed on Monday, Dec. 26:

Open:

• Most major grocery stores, including Whole Foods Square One
• Walmart Supercentre at Square One
• Celebration Square Ice Rink
• Shoppers Drug Mart locations
• Square One Shopping Centre
• Erin Mills Town Centre
• Dixie Outlet Mall
• Heartland Town Centre
• Mississauga Chinese Centre (check ahead of time for store hours)
• LCBO stores: Select stores will be open (check ahead of time)
• The Beer Store: Select stores will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (two Mississauga locations open: Hurontario St./Hillcrest Ave. and at 420 Lakeshore Rd. E.)
• Movie theatres
• Costco locations
• Loblaws locations

Closed:

• Government offices (including Mississauga City Hall) will be closed Dec. 26 to Dec. 28
• 3-1-1 Citizen Contact Centre (closed Dec. 24 to Dec. 27)
• Banks (closed through Dec. 27)
• Libraries
• Community centres (check City of Mississauga website for hours at different locations)
• Canada Post: no mail pickup or delivery on Dec. 26-27
• There is no garbage and recycling collection on Dec. 26 (one day later this week).  Community Recycling Centres are closed Dec. 26

Transit

• MiWay will operate on a holiday schedule from Dec. 2o to Jan. 3
• GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule on Dec. 26
• TransHelp–all trips for Dec. 25-27 must be booked by 6 p.m. on Dec. 24
