Earlier reports indicated that a long-standing entertainment complex is going to shutter its doors for good in 2019.

insauga.com was initially told that the 40,000 sq. ft. indoor Playdium complex–which also features an 11 acre outdoor park with one of Canada’s longest go-kart tracks–was closing down in 2019.

A Playdium representative initially confirmed the closure, but said the last date of operation is not yet known.

Cineplex has since disputed the information.

Last year, Cineplex announced that it plans to open a brand new Rec Room location at Square One. If you haven’t heard of The Rec Room, Cineplex defines it as “Canada’s newest hotspot for ‘Eats and Entertainment.’”

Cineplex operates both Rec Room and Playdium.

The Rec Room is a major entertainment complex that fuses food and activities and the upcoming location will boast food, live entertainment and gaming experiences. The Square One location will take shape in the north end of the complex (where Target was located) and will occupy about 44,000 square feet of space and two full floors.

It will be part of Square One’s significant west expansion project, which will debut with the opening of Uniqlo in November. A number of other businesses and retailers will occupy the revitalized space, including Indigo (the Chapters on Rathburn will be closing and moving into part of the vacant Target space) and the mall’s much-anticipated Food District.

Cineplex recently announced that it would be opening a new Playdium location in nearby Brampton.

The original Playdium in Mississauga opened over 20 years ago, and the brand is still expanding. With new locations in Whitby and Brampton, Cineplex plans to open 10-15 more Playdium locations in mid-sized communities across Canada in the coming years.

Cineplex also plans to open 10-15 new Rec Room locations over the next few years.

Editor’s Note: insauga.com initially confirmed the closure by phone with a Playdium representative at the Square One area location. Cineplex then reached out to insauga.com to say that they have no plans to close the Playdium facility in Mississauga.

Updates to follow.
