Toronto man second arrested in $36,000 credit card fraud case: Durham police

Durham Regional Police have arrested a second man in a credit card fraud case that racked up $36,000 in purchases across the region.
The Financial Crimes Unit started to investigate a three-week stretch of fraudulent purchases on a business credit card late last year. Their investigation initially culminated in a raid on Jan. 17.
Police searched a Thornhill home, arrested the occupant and searched his car. During the raid, police allege they found unspecified drugs, two prohibited weapons, fraudulently obtained merchandise, a large amount of counterfeit money, and identity documents not in the suspect’s name.
Matthew Bortolus, 42, of Thornhill, was charged with a battery of offences, including fraud over $5,000, unauthorized use of credit card data, and drug possession for trafficking.
Months later, police arrested a second man in the case.
Police allege David Gottardo, 57, of Toronto, fraudulently used the credit card to make the $36,000 in purchases. They announced his arrest on Mar. 21 on 44 charges, including numerous counts of fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.
