The urgent care centre and Brampton’s Peel Memorial is operating at regular hours after an early closure due staffing shortages on the weekend.

William Osler Health Systems warned of reduced hours at the Peel Memorial Centre’s urgent care department on Sunday (July 10), closing at 5:00 p.m. rather than the usual 9:00 p.m.

The health system said it was experiencing “human resource challenges,” and the urgent care centre was reopened for regular hours on Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Osler facilities in Brampton have been experiencing staffing and capacity issues in recent months.

The health system temporarily closed Peel Memorial’s urgent care centre in January due to increasing patient volumes in emergency departments caused by the surge in COVID-19 Omicron infections.

Osler, which also oversees the operations at Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General, also declared a “Code Orange” at Brampton Civic in January as an increase in COVID-19 patients and staffing challenges are impacting hospital capacity.

Peel Memorial is slated for an upgrade with a renewed funding commitment from the province in recent months.

The city’s portion of the new Brampton Civic cancer centre and Peel Memorial projects comes in at $125 million, with Brampton already covering half the bill by transferring $62.5 million from capital reserves.

Council has also passed a motion which will see Brampton residents pay a 1 per cent tax levy to help pay for the projects, as the city still needs to plug the remaining $62.5 million funding gap by 2027.

The combined cost of both projects is an estimated $1.1 billion, with the city and Osler required to fund a local share of $250 million.
