OLG pays out $800,000 in casino revenue to Mississaugas of Scugog

The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation has received an $800,000 payout from the Ontario Lottery and Gambling Corporation (OLG) for operating the Blue Heron Casino.
This second-quarter payout brings the nation’s revenue up to nearly $1.7 million this year, and more than $32 million since the Blue Heron opened in 2000.
“These payments to host communities are based on a formula consistently applied across all gaming sites in Ontario using a graduated scale of gaming revenue at the hosted site,” the OLG described.
“OLG continues to be a proud partner in hosting gaming communities,” said Minister of Finance and Pickering-Uxbridge MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy, “Municipality Contribution Agreement payments help these municipalities fund priorities such as community infrastructure, parks and recreation and local health care facilities, benefiting families and local residents.”
The last payout in July brought in $865,000, giving them another reason to celebrate right after their annual Powwow. However, the relationship between the First Nation and the Ontario government has been fraught recently.
The Mississaugas have frequently decried the actions of Premier Doug Ford’s government, including the corrupted Green Belt land swap, changes to development rules, the rollout of online gambling, and celebrity endorsements of e-gaming.
