A man has died in a shooting next to a Mississauga school last night.

Two people were shot in the Montevideo Road and Lorca Crescent area, outside Settler’s Green Public School, in Meadowvale around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday (May 22), police said earlier this morning.

At the time, police said the shooting victims were sent to hospital in life-threatening condition.

In an update, Peel Regional Police Const. Nikhil Chakravarthy confirmed a man in his 40s died in the shooting.

The shooting happened after a gathering around the school parking lot and park area, Chakravarthy told insauga.com.

There was an altercation between the two victims and an unknown number of other people at the gathering, he said.

The man in his 40s was transported to hospital but was pronounced dead.

The second person, a male victim under the age of 20 remains in hospital in critical condition as of this morning, he said.

Police have not yet confirmed the age of the young victim.

“We’re still working on the appropriate notification so we cannot confirm whether or not he is a young person or an adult,” Chakravarthy said.

The suspect or suspects fled the area and police do not have a description yet.

Police are expected to remain on scene for the investigation throughout the morning.

The school will remain open though the parking lot is closed, a spokesperson for the Peel District School Board told insauga.com.
