A Mississauga lottery winner plans to use the extra funds to ease into retirement.

Hyoshin Kim of Mississauga won the top prize, $1 million in the Merry Millions Jan. 9 draw, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) said in a press release today (March 28).

As a regular lottery player Kim, 59, was interested in the new, limited-time Merry Millions game and decided to buy a ticket, OLG said.

“I was out buying some groceries and decided that was a good time to check my ticket at the self-checker. I was flabbergasted to see so many zeros pop up on the screen!” Kim said while picking up the million-dollar cheque at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.

The first person Kim told was her mother-in-law.

“She couldn’t believe that I had won so much. I am just walking on a cloud!”

Kim is employed at a lottery retailer so she had to wait out a 30-day publication period as the claim falls within OLG’s definition of an “insider win.” She did not buy the ticket at her place of employment.

Kim has several plans for the winnings.

“I plan to use the winnings to pay off the mortgage, share with my children and also retire from my job in retail,” she said.

The winning ticket was purchased at Silver Creek Convenience on Silver Creek Boulevard in Mississauga.

Merry Millions was a limited-time OLG lottery game available for $20 from Nov. 21, 2023 to Jan. 9, 2024, featuring three $1 million guaranteed top prizes, three $50,000 early bird prizes, plus 402 additional prizes between $1,000 and $250,000.
