The Staircase Theatre in downtown Hamilton is reopening (again) under new management.

In a social media post shared late Sunday (March 27), the theatre’s new management confirmed that the theatre would be reopening with plans to return it to its roots as an arts incubator.

The new management team hopes to run classes, workshops, public and private events, screenings, comedy shows, anything to do with the performing arts in the space.

Hamilton’s RELAY Coffee Roasters is also the new operator of the fully licensed café space inside the Staircase, which will be the coffee makers’ third location in the city.

The space will navigate this next chapter in its evolution under the watchful eye of HubUp Event Management, a partnership between Matthew Surina, of Hub of the Hammer Event Planning, and Marc Nascimento, of 1UP Games.

The Staircase was forced to close early this year as repeated closures and capacity limits took a toll on the business, which had assumed new ownership in the fall of 2020, about six months into the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under that management structure, the venue still offered arts programming (when it could), and the cafe churned out some delicious vegan comfort food.

Firm dates for the venue’s reopening are yet to be determined, but in the meantime, those looking to rent out the space or host an event are encouraged to reach out to discuss the possibilities.
