Hamilton’s fresh pasta shop, formerly known as Pasta Mercato, has expanded and rebranded. Now, they’re hiring a baker, pasta maker, and barista.

Pasta Mercato took Locke Street by storm when it opened in September 2021, offering fresh pasta, focaccia, Italian cheeses, sauces, grab-and-go sandwiches, pizza slices, and desserts.

The first year went so well at 170 Locke St. South that owners Melanie and Roman Kremnev are taking over the space next door.

The business will now be called Artie’s.

“The expansion will focus on sourdough calabrese bread, focaccia, sandwich bread, sandwiches, and some long sourdough pizzas. Did we mention more bread?” reads a post on Instagram.

“Our pastry selection will focus on sweets made from fruits or nuts (sometimes both). Don’t worry; our classic desserts you see in the shop now will still be around!”

Artie’s is also adding an espresso machine.

The Kremnevs, who recently celebrated the birth of their first child, met in the hospitality industry. Melanie is a chef, and Roman is a baker. The duo saw a need for quick and affordable restaurant-quality food during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With the pandemic, this concept made a lot of sense,” Roman told inthehammer.com. “You want quality food to take home without spending restaurant prices.”

Roman’s original plan was to open a bakery in the east end.

“I started at the Locke Street Farmer’s Market selling baked goods. But there, I met the landlord for our current location, and one thing led to another… it just all came together,” explained Roman. “Being (on Locke Street) is perfect for us because there is a ton of foot traffic and many young families that are really busy.”

The expansion is expected to be completed in February 2023, but those interested in working at Artie’s can email their resume to [email protected].
