March often goes out like a lion, but Monday’s chilly temperatures in Hamilton were almost without precedent in the last 100 years.

Weather historian Rolf Campbell posted in the r/Hamilton Reddit page that the city had its coldest March 28 in almost 100 years. The high temperature was a frigid -4.7C, which likely came between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., based on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s hourly readings.

The only day on record where the high was colder was back in 1923, 99 years ago, when the high was -10.6C. There have only been seven other times that the temperature in Hamilton stayed below freezing on March 28. The only other times in the last 50 years where in 2015 (-1C), 1975 (-0.6) and 1974 (-2.2C).

Climate data shows that the temperature is typically several degrees above freezing in Hamilton at this time of year. The high one year earlier was 8.7C, and the temperature broke into double digits at 11.5C back on March 28, 2019.

Sunday marked three years since Hamilton city council declared a climate crisis. Hamilton has had a handful of weather records this month that include record warmth and record wind.

On March 17, Hamilton was the warmest place in Canada when the temperature reached 19.5C. Eleven days prior to that, on March 6, a gust of wind surpassing 100 kilometres per hour was recorded in the city.
