The gusting winds in Hamilton on Sunday set a record for the date — and by a considerable margin.

A day when many Hamilton residents got outdoors to enjoy temperatures that shot into the mid-teens also had wind gusts of more than 100 kilometres recorded for the first time on March 6. Both independent weather expert Rolf Campbell of YOW_Weather_Records and Environment and Climate Change Canada, the federal weather agency, recorded gusts in the triple digits in Hamilton.

Campbell’s tracking showed a maximum wind gust in the city of 103 km/h. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) registered a gust of 105.

According to the former, the previous record for the date was 74 km/h, registered 23 years earlier on March 6, 1999. It was the eighth time that a gust of at least 60 km/h has been recorded on March 6 since the current method of record-keeping was adopted in 1972.

The only March day in the last five years with a max gust in the same range was on March 29, 2020, when ECCC registered a gale of 96 km/h. Like Sunday, that day was also unseasonably warm, with a recorded high of 19.8 C.

The previous high for a maximum gust this year in Hamilton was 81 km/h, which was recorded on Jan. 5. A 77 km/h gust was also recorded on Feb. 19.
