Mississauga and Brampton residents looking to get rid of extra rubbish can kick their clutter to the curb next month.

After service suspensions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Region of Peel’s Garbage Exemption period will run from June 13 to June 23.

During the garbage exemption period there is no maximum amount of acceptable garbage you can put on the curb.

No garbage bag tags are required and extra garbage is collected on your garbage collection day, not on your recycling collection day.

In order to be picked up an extra garbage bag cannot:

  • Weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs).
  • Be larger than 66 cm (26 in) wide and 90 cm (35 in) high.
  • Be smaller than 30 cm (12 in) wide and 30 cm (12 in) high.

In April, Mississauga was dealing with tonnes of discarded trash on streets, in parks, rivers and streams.

City clean-up crews reported a significant increase in litter since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic over two years ago.

Litter items such as discarded face masks and other personal protective equipment have been found on the streets and in parks in large numbers, officials say, many of the items hanging from trees and bushes.

To find your garbage exemption day check the Region of Peel’s collection calendar. You can also sign up for free weekly collection reminders by email, text message, or by phone.
