Flooding possible in parts of city as thunderstorms, heavy rain bear down on Mississauga

City officials are urging people to avoid creeks, rivers and low-lying areas in Mississauga as heavy rain could cause flooding in certain areas throughout the day and night on Tuesday.

Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected in Mississauga and other parts of the Greater Toronto Area, creating the possibility of flooding near roads and bridges, the City of Mississauga said in an online statement Tuesday morning.

“Storms may develop this morning and continue into the afternoon, with the greatest impacts expected later in the day,” city officials said.

During such weather, the city advises residents and others to:

• Avoid rivers, creeks and low-lying areas.
• Watch for flooding near roads and bridges.
• Never drive through pooled or flooded water, and slow down and leave space while driving.
• Clear storm drains near your home.
• Secure loose outdoor items.
• Have an emergency kit ready.

To report any concerns/issues such as flooded areas or other potentially dangerous situations, residents are urged to call the city’s information/reporting line at 311.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (Environment Canada) is calling for showers, strong wind gusts and a risk of thunderstorms across the Greater Toronto Area and southern Ontario on Tuesday.

The weather agency added the risk of thunderstorms is especially high in the afternoon, and a southwest wind of around 30 km/h could gust up to 50 km/h.

Strong wind gusts and heavy rain are possible in some parts of the province. Up to 40 mm of rainfall is possible in some areas on Tuesday with a peak local hourly amount of up to 30 mm.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, Environment Canada is calling for a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of showers during the day, a high of 22 C and a low of 12 C.

Sunny conditions are expected to return to Mississauga and the rest of the GTA on Thursday with clear skies and a high of 26 C.
