fireworks ban brampton diwali

Setting off fireworks in Brampton could lead to fines of up to $100,000, the city reminds residents ahead of Diwali.

The annual festival of lights falls on Oct. 31 this year and is often celebrated with fireworks. Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists celebrate across the world.

Personal fireworks were banned in Brampton following particularly explosive Diwali celebrations in 2022, which saw more than 1,000 complaints filed to city hall.

The ban includes the use, sale, offer, display, purchase, distribution, possession and discharge of any fireworks or explosives within the city. Penalties for breaking the bylaw range from $500 to $1,000 and may reach up to $100,000 if a court summons is issued.

Sparklers are permitted.

Residents are encouraged to attend the city-organized fireworks display on Nov. 1 at Sesquicentennial Park, 11333 Bramalea Rd.

This free, family event will feature main stage performances by both local and international artists, including opener Gurpreet Maan, followed by Punjabi artists G. Sidhu, Chani Nattan and Inderpal Moga, according to the City of Brampton event page.

Nachdi Jawani Bhangra Team, Taaj Entertainment and DJ Prince will also hit the stage.

The event includes the city’s largest fireworks show at 7:30 p.m.
