Drivers are being warned to stay clear of downed power lines that have led to a road closure north of Brampton.

Peel Public Works says crews have closed Olde Base Line Road from Highway 10 to McLaughlin Road due to downed hydro lines in the area.

Motorists should avoid the area and find alternate routes if possible, and no time frame has been given for when the road is expected to reopen.

Repair crews are also working to restore power to nearly 500 Brampton homes and businesses as outages are being reported across southern Ontario.

Alectra Utilities said approximately 477 customers were left without power around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the area of Chinguacousy Road to Dixie Rd, and from Stafford Drive to Hwy 407.

Another outage was also reported in Mississauga on Wednesday impacting another 542 homes and businesses in the area of Lakeshore Road and Southdown Road.

A special weather statement has been issued for Southern Ontario with Alectra expecting strong winds gusting between 70 and 80 km/h.
