‘Dangerous’ storms possible as weather alert issued in southern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for part of southern Ontario.

A yellow severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for southwestern areas of the province, including London, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia, and Windsor.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain,” the alert says.

Wind gusts of 90 km/h to 110 km/h are possible, along with quarter to ping pong ball sized hail, and local rainfall totals of more than 50 mm.

The storms could occur Monday afternoon through the evening.

“Thunderstorms over western Lake Huron will continue to move southeastwards and affect the area this afternoon and evening,” Environment Canada said.

“Rainfall amounts may exceed 50 mm for locations that receive multiple thunderstorms. Local utility outages are possible. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible.”

“Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility,” the alert added.

“Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.”

As INsauga.com reported earlier Monday, parts of Ontario could see some active weather over the next couple of days.

Environment Canada has issued thunderstorm outlooks for Monday and Tuesday, warning of a risk of storms, some of which could be severe.
