Canada has updated travel advisories for Mexico, Germany and other top tourist destinations.

School will be done in a few weeks and many families plan a summer trip.

Flight prices may be higher than normal due to the conflict in Iran, but there are some deals out there.

Travellers planning to go abroad this summer may want to check out the latest advisories.

Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories website helps travellers make informed decisions and travel safely outside the country.

Here are five countries with updated advisories:

Turks and Caicos Islands

Risks: Crime.

Reasons: Crime occurs throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands, but is most prevalent on Providenciales, the most populous island.

The advisory suggests travellers keep personal belongings, including passports and other travel documents, in a secure place, never leave personal belongings unattended, especially on beaches and in vehicles, and be extra cautious when withdrawing cash from ATMs, particularly at night.

Travellers should also avoid using unmarked, illegal taxis called “jitneys,” as drivers have committed sexual assaults.

Cybercrime, malware attacks and online extortion occur. Criminals can compromise public Wi-Fi networks to steal personal data or credit information.

Mexico

Risks: High levels of criminal activity and kidnapping.

Reasons: Petty and violent crime occurs in major cities, popular tourist areas and resorts. Fighting between criminal gangs and cartels has taken place in hotels, nightclubs and restaurants.

Armed robberies occur frequently. Criminals sometimes follow a victim after they exchange or withdraw money. The advisory suggests travellers should not resist an attack. Avoid withdrawing or exchanging money in public areas of the airport.

Express kidnappings, where kidnappers demand small, immediate ransoms, may occur in large urban areas. Criminals kidnap the victim from the street or a taxi and force the person to withdraw funds from an ATM. The victim is sometimes held overnight so that a second withdrawal can be made the next day. Thieves often work in cooperation with, or pose as, taxi drivers.

Dominican Republic

Risks: Crime.

Reasons: Petty crime, including pickpocketing and bag-snatching, occurs frequently. Tourists are common targets for theft.

Violent crime occurs, occasionally targeting foreigners. Incidents take place mainly after nightfall in large cities. Criminals target cars for armed robberies on the roads, especially after nightfall. Travellers should arrange to arrive and depart from the Dominican Republic during daylight hours, the advisory suggests.

Credit and debit card, as well as ATM, fraud occur frequently. Card reader tampering, also known as skimming, is a common scam. Businesses could try to save your credit or debit card information when you make a legitimate purchase through a compromised card reader. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards.

Germany

Risks: Threat of terrorism.

Reasons: Terrorist attacks could occur at any time. Over the past few years, several attacks have occurred in Germany. These have resulted in many injuries and deaths. Further attacks are likely.

Targets could include government buildings, schools, places of worship, airports and other transportation hubs and networks, and public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, Christmas markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners.

The advisory suggests travellers be particularly vigilant if attending sporting events and during religious holidays and other public celebrations, as terrorists have used such occasions to mount attacks.

Philippines

Risks: Earthquake, crime, terrorism and kidnapping.

Reasons: On June 8, 2026, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck offshore near Sarangani, Mindanao, causing extensive infrastructure damage and resulting in several casualties.

Additional tremors are likely to continue. Landslides, especially in mountainous or hilly areas, are also possible. Travellers should avoid entering or staying in damaged buildings until they have been inspected and declared safe by authorities.

Crime remains a serious concern throughout the country. Violent crime, such as armed robbery, sexual assault, and murder, occurs regularly. Gangs are active, including in Metro Manila.

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, swarming and bag snatching, occurs, especially in urban areas.

There is a threat of terrorism in the Philippines. In recent years, the Filipino government has intensified its fight against terrorists. Counterterrorism operations diminished the capacity of terrorist groups to operate in the Philippines. However, militants remain in the country even if attacks are less common.
