A 19-year-old accused of killing a Brampton woman in a hit-and-run crash last month has fled the country, police say.

On Sunday (Feb. 20), police say 24-year-old Kavita Chodhary from Brampton was walking along Derry Road East and was crossing the road at Cattrick Street when she was struck by a dark coloured vehicle.

The driver allegedly fled the scene without stopping or attempting to give any assistance to Chodhary, who was transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators located the suspect vehicle four days after the crash but did not issue a warrant for the driver’s arrest.

Police have now issued a Canada-wide warrant for 19-year-old Pawan Malik of Brampton. He is accused of Failure to Stop After Accident Resulting in Death.

Malik fled the country soon after the crash, but police declined to comment on where he may have fled to.

If and when Malik is located, police say the Crown intends to seek extradition so can be brought back to Canada to face charges.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call investigators at the Major Collision Bureau (905) 453-2121, ext. 3710. Information may also be left anonymously by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visiting peelcrimestoppers.ca.
