A Brampton man has been charged with assault after an alleged early morning crime spree and a run from police that ended with an arrest at a place of worship in Mississauga.

Shortly before 4:00 a.m. on Monday (April 18), police say a man attended a residence in the area of Woodward Avenue and Centre Street North in Brampton.

An argument ensued between two people at the home and the male, who allegedly assaulted the victims with a hammer before fleeing the area.

About an hour and a half later, police were called to a business in the area of Bovaird Drive and Mountainash Road for reports of an alleged carjacking with a weapon.

Police say the same man from the earlier assault entered a running vehicle.

When the owner returned to his car, police say the suspect pointed “what was believed to be a firearm” towards the owner.

The weapon was later confirmed to be a hammer, and police say the suspect then fled the area in the stolen vehicle.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m., police say the stolen vehicle was located at the Sri Guru Singh Sabha in the area of Derry Road and Airport Road in Mississauga.

The suspect was reportedly seen entering the Gurdwara, and police say they located the man inside after searching the building.

Manpreet Singh, 33, from Brampton has been charged with:

  • Two counts of Assault with a Weapon
  • Robbery
  • Breach of Probation
  • Fail to Comply with Court Order

The accused was held for a bail hearing and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Monday.

Police said none of the victims were physically injured, adding that the incidents were “isolated” and that there is no further concern for public safety.

Daljit Singh Sekhon, President of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Malton, thanked police “for their quick action to bring this potentially dangerous situation to a safe conclusion.”
