Those interested in agriculture and possible changes to the industry may want to get involved in a Peel advisory group.

Concerns around the future of agriculture in Ontario have recently surfaced due to the threat of land lost to housing developments.

The Peel Agricultural Advisory Working Group (PAAWG) may be one way to get involved and they are looking for volunteers.

“PAAWG and its role and mandate will be subject to Regional review, further to the proposed enactment and implementation of Ontario Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022,” a press release from the Region of Peel notes.

Currently, the group advises Peel Regional Council on the farming industry and agricultural community and assists in implementing relevant Region policies and programs.

The members have knowledge and/or experience in agriculture, urban agriculture, agri-environmental and/or rural topics.

Peel Region has 377 farms on nearly 39,000 hectares of land, according to the Region of Peel 2021 agriculture census. The industry contributes $96 million in revenue to the economy.

The Peel Agricultural Advisory Working Group has the following positions available:

  • Peel citizen-at-large (three members)
  • Representative of a Peel agricultural society or other special agricultural interest group (two members)
  • Representative of a Peel youth organization or alternative representative of the agricultural community (one member)

Members will be appointed for a term of four years, from 2022-2026.

More information on qualifications and the application are available at https://www.peelregion.ca/planning/paawg.asp

The deadline to apply is Nov. 30.
