What's closed on boxing day

It’s called Boxing Day because, starting in medieval Britain, servants had a day off and would receive a gift box.

This year, Boxing Day falls on Tuesday, Dec. 26. Most stores and other select business locations will be open for business after being closed on Christmas Day.

Here’s what’s open and closed in Mississauga on Tuesday, Dec. 26:

Open:

  • Most major grocery stores, including Whole Foods Square One, Loblaws, Metro, etc.
  • Walmart Supercentre at Square One
  • Celebration Square Ice Rink (normal hours)
  • Shoppers Drug Marts
  • Square One Shopping Centre
  • Erin Mills Town Centre
  • Dixie Outlet Mall
  • Sheridan Centre
  • Meadowvale Town Centre
  • Heartland Town Centre
  • Mississauga Chinese Centre (check ahead of time for store hours)
  • LCBO (select stores are open at reduced hours)
  • The Beer Store (select stores are open at reduced hours. Open locations in Mississauga are at 3154 Hurontario St., 420 Lakeshore Rd. E., 5800 McLaughlin Rd., all open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Movie theatres
  • Costco locations

Closed:

  • Government offices (including Mississauga City Hall)
  • 311 Mississauga Citizen Contact Centre
  • Banks
  • Libraries
  • Community centres (check the City of Mississauga website for hours at different locations)
  • Canada Post (no mail delivery)
  • The following Region of Peel non-emergency services will close starting Monday, Dec. 25 and will reopen on Jan. 2, 2024:

    • Access Peel Counters
    • Dental Services Contact Centre (closed as of Dec. 23)
    • Early Years and Child Care Services
    • Housing Services, Client Services
    • Healthy Sexuality Clinics (only closed Dec. 25 and 26 and Jan. 1).
    • Needle Exchange Program and Harm Reduction – Mobile Van (only closed Dec. 25 and 26 and Jan. 1).
    • For urgent homelessness supports, including food, supplies, referrals, and shelter, call the Street Helpline 24/7 at 1-877-848-8481. For information on emergency shelter, visit the emergency shelter web page or call 905-450-1996.

Transit

  • MiWay will operate on a holiday schedule from Dec. 25 until Jan. 7
  • GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule on Dec. 26
  • TransHelp–all trips for Dec. 25-27 must be booked by 7 p.m. on Dec. 24 (buses will operate 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Dec. 26). TransHelp office is closed

Waste collection

  • waste and recycling picked up curbside one day later than usual Dec. 26 to 29
  • Community Recycling Centres closed on Dec. 26
