An arrest has been made after video emerged of a fire being set to a Hamilton home while a family with young children was asleep inside.

Hamilton Police arrested a 32-year-old man from Cambridge after video emerged of a fire being set to the wooden porch outside a home. A family with young children was asleep inside.

On Dec. 5, 2022, at around 3:30 a.m., police were called to the Burton St. home between Wentworth St. and Victoria Ave. in Hamilton.

Police say a neighbour witnessed and extinguished the fire before alerting the family about what had happened.

“Without this person’s assistance, the fire could have resulted in a tragedy,” said police.

Daniel William Arnold is charged with arson and failure to comply with his probation.

“On behalf of the family and investigators, many thanks to multiple community members for coming forward and assisting with identifying the suspect involved in the arson,” issued police. “The family was able to enjoy the holidays knowing the suspect was held in custody.”

Surveillance video released by police last month showed a silver, four-door, 2015 to 2020 Ford F150 pickup truck leaving the scene.
