Air Canada, which operates the majority of its flights through Pearson Airport in Mississauga, ranked No. 1 in the world in most flights delayed this past holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, Pearson didn’t escape the wrong side of the airport version of that list. Canada’s busiest airport was No. 2 in the world this past Saturday and Sunday in terms of percentage of flight departures that were delayed, at 53 per cent.

Guangzhou’s main airport in China was was No. 1. Montreal’s airport placed sixth.

Air Canada achieved the unwelcome international ranking thanks to two-thirds of its flights, 717 in total, arriving late at various destinations on July 2 and 3, according to airline tracking service FlightAware.

Recording a 67 per cent late flight rate on Sunday, Air Canada was more than 14 percentage points above three airlines that tied for second place–two of which are affiliated with Air Canada (Jazz Aviation and Air Canada Rouge).

Olympic Air (Greece) rounded out the list of three just behind Air Canada.

On Saturday, two other carriers that do a lot of business out of Pearson–WestJet and Swoop–placed third and fourth on the most-delayed list, at 55 per cent.

Late last week, in response to various issues the aviation industry is facing as travellers return to airports in huge, unexpected numbers, Air Canada announced it will cut dozens of daily flights this summer from Pearson Airport and other airports across the country.
