11 break and enters in 7 days around one street in Mississauga

Break and enters are a relatively common occurrence in Mississauga, but we don’t often see so many of them situated in one place.

However, police’s crime data indicates that from Apr. 15 to Apr. 21 there were at least 28 break and enters in the city — with 11 of them happening on or around Dundas St.

There were an additional eight break and enters during that same time period in Brampton.

The majority of the break-ins around Dundas St targeted stores or restaurants. Two of them were related to a string of break-ins by a male suspect, for whom police recently issued an arrest warrant.

Police later released a surveillance video in which the suspect is seen targeting a grocery store’s donation box.

The full data indicates that of the 37 collective break and enters across Mississauga and Brampton for that week, 19 happened at restaurants, eight at stores, seven at houses, and three at apartments.

“On average, residents of Brampton and Mississauga experience seven residential break and enters each day,” police say.

“Residential break-ins are typically crimes of opportunity, burglars typically target certain property based on characteristics that will increase their chances of breaking-in without getting caught.”

Police say areas likely to be targeted include corner lots, homes that back onto parks and other open spaces (which typically allow for greater access into the home), and property that does not appear to be maintained or “lived in.”
