Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating what led to a woman’s death after she was taken to an Oshawa hospital by Durham officers.

The Special Investigations Unit says the incident started as a call about a 23-year-old woman in crisis around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday in the area of Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road East.

Investigators say that officers apprehended the woman and took her to the Lakeridge Health Oshawa hospital, where she was released a short while later.

But security then saw the woman in the hospital’s parking garage and alerted police, and the woman was found on the ground below, the SIU says.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased, and the SIU is investigating the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.

Anyone with information about this incident can contact the SIU by calling 1-800-787-8529 or online at www.siu.on.ca.

The SIU is Ontario’s police watchdog agency that investigates police incidents in Ontario involving death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm, or allegations of sexual assault.
