Winter weather travel advisory in Hamilton on a snowy Easter Monday

A heavy mix of rain and snow has turned to the latter late this afternoon in Hamilton.

As a result, a winter weather travel advisory is extent for the city as of 2:18 p.m. on April 18. Environment and Climate Change Canada (EC) is indicating that motorists could face “significantly reduced visibilities in heavy snow.”
While it might have been shorts weather for the hardier demographic of the populace just a day or few ago, around 4 to 8 centimetres of snow are expected to fall. The peak volume could be up to 3 cm per hour.

Areas of higher terrain may see more snow accumulations. But any of the downtown city centre, north of the Niagara Escarpment, only needed to look out of their window to see snow falling, even though it has officially been spring for four weeks.

“The onset of precipitation will likely begin as rain before quickly changing over to snow,” ECCC says. “The snow is expected to fall heavily for a few hours leading to reduced visibility at times. Above freezing temperaetures early in the day may limit snowfall accumulations somewhat, especially on surfaces such as roads and sidewalks. Locally higher snowfall accumulations may occur over areas of higher terrain including the Dundalk highlands and the Niagara escarpment where temperatures will be slightly cooler.”

Hamilton has had snow in the back half of April in recent years. Historical data from ECCC shows that there was 4.6 cm of snow on April 20, 2021, and 6.6 cm fell over the course of the following day.

When it comes to April 18 in particular, though, there has not been snow on this date within the previous 10 years.
