Whitby residents asked to weigh in on new park design

Whitby park-goers will soon have a new destination for picnics and outdoor fun at the Chelsea Hill Park by next fall, and the Town wants to know how residents would like to see it designed.
The new park will sit at Marcel Brunelle Drive in West Whitby with construction set to begin in the spring. In advance of breaking ground, Town staff began the design process last fall.
Whitby’s goal is for the design to accommodate as diverse a set of visitors as possible. Features are set to include, a playground surfaced with wood fibre, a sandbox play area, a gazebo-like shade structure, two tennis courts, a walking trail dotted with rest benches, and newly-planted trees.
The proposed layout and features can be view on Whitby’s website. A survey through ConnectWhitby is asking residents what kind of additional features they’d like to see.
There is also a survey on the features and design for the playground, including overall design, whether contemporary or nature themed for example, the color palette, and questions regarding the ideal number of slides, swings and other features.
Chelsea Hill will be designated as a “local park,” the Town’s second smallest category, designed to serve the neighbourhoods in the immediately surrounding the area. Typically a local park contain sports fields, playgrounds, courts, and walkways.

Smaller Parkettes are mostly focused on playgrounds and walking paths, while Town Parks, the largest designation, contain major facilities like swimming pools and large athletic fields which aim to serve the entire community.
Residents have until February 6 to provide feedback on the planned park through the survey.
