Whitby homes takes top spot for most expensive home for sale in Durham; Oshawa building sweeps top five least expensive

A “luxurious and opulent” custom home in Whitby designed for entertaining is the priciest home on the market in Durham Region this month, with the 8,000 sq. ft. estate listed at $3,850,000.

The 2-storey home on Scott Street boast four bedrooms, an elevator (!), a gourmet kitchen (with a prep kitchen), 11-foot ceilings on the main floor (with 10-foot ceilings on the upper level), a theatre room with surround sound, a large finished basement with a gym, a basketball court out back and a huge back yard.

Number two on the most expensive homes for sale in May, according to Zoocasa Realty brokerage, is a 3-bedroom, five bathroom custom bungalow on Aked Road in Clarington that has more than 6,000 sq. ft of living space and a 1,000 sq. ft outbuilding on ten acres. The home has a finished walkout in the basement, an upper level loft and Lake Ontario views. The home is selling for $3,299,000.

The third most expensive home on the market in Durham is a 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom luxury home on Rougemount Drive in Pickering. The 6,000 sq. ft house in an enclave of custom homes is near the Rouge Valley and is also listed at $3,299,000.

Fourth on the list is a 2-story home on Townline Road in Courtice on a 1.5 acre lot. The home boasts five bedrooms and five bathrooms, a custom chef’s kitchen (with two ovens) with walk-in pantry, a backyard oasis with saltwater pool and dry sauna, a basement perfect for entertaining and a 1,000 sq. ft. workshop. The home is for sale for $3,200,000.

At #5 is a 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom home near Lake Ontario and Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering, The 5,000-plus sq. ft. open concept home has four stone fireplaces, a finished basement with 15-foot ceilings and nanny quarters and lists for $2,989,000.

The five least expensive homes sold in Durham all share one common attribute: the address. All five are studio apartments at 1900 Simcoe St. N in Oshawa’s University District. Most are currently rented but will be vacant soon as the school year at Ontario Tech University and Durham College ends this month. All are touted as excellent investment opportunities, especially for first-time investors.

The units range in price from $259,000 (three of the five) to $307,000.

All are furnished and come with appliances, entertainment options and built-in Murphy Beds.
