WHITBY: COVID-19 numbers continue to fall in Durham Region

COVID-19 cases continue to fall in Durham Region, with every single category showing less frequency of the dreaded virus in the community.
The only category with no change was the important statistic: deaths. There were no new deaths from the virus last week, as was the case in the seven-day period from May 15-21.
Hospitalizations last week dropped to 18 from 44, with two in ICU; the incident rate per 100,000 fell by nearly half to 34.8 from 61.8 – the sixth consecutive week of declining numbers – and the positivity rate went from 9.4 per cent to 6.9 per cent.
The total number of cases fell to 255 in the week of May 22-28 from 452 the previous week.
There were three new outbreaks at institutions, such as long-term care homes and hospitals, bringing the total of current outbreaks to seven. There were a dozen the previous week.
Absenteeism rates in local schools were also stable and normal for this time of year at 3.9 per cent (child care centres), 4.0 per cent (elementary schools) and 2.6 per cent (secondary schools).
