The Town of Whitby is seeking local artists for a road mural project in Downtown Brooklin.

Roebuck Street will be closed during August and September give local artists time to complete the mural, which will spell out ‘Brooklin,’ and to enhance this outdoor space with the inclusion of planters, Adirondack Chairs and picnic tables, creating an extension of Grass Park.

Each letter in the mural will be approximately 5.5 m x 2.5 m (18 ft x 8.2 ft) in size and will be created/painted by local artists showcasing their vision and talent. The Town of Whitby will determine which artist receives which letter to paint once applicants are selected. The artist will be required to paint their letter on an asphalt road in late July/early August pending weather.

The Call for Artists, with the theme, Brooklin – Past, Present, Future, is open to Whitby/Brooklin artists only.

Applications open April 14 and the submission deadline is May 27.

The artists will be evaluated by an online jury panel based on the following criteria:

  • Overall artistic merit
  • Concept sketch for the ‘Brooklin’ letter
  • Family or community friendly
  • Promotes local identity/placemaking
  • Innovative, creative and inclusive

The Town will pay a $500 honorarium for each artist. Materials, such as paint and paint brushes, will be included.
