Two important community hubs will get new roofs soon.

Whitby council recently approved roof replacements for Whitby Iroquois Park Sports Centre and Whitby Station Gallery.

The tender for the roof work went to Semple Gooder Roofing Corporation for a whopping $1,204,198.60.

The costs are $189,198.60 over budget due to increased costs of roofing insulation and materials as well as labour shortages. The effects of the pandemic on the construction industry, supply chain issues, record inflation rates and resource shortages have been difficult to predict, according to a staff report.

The roofs on both the sports centre and gallery have “exceeded their useful life” and need replacing, the staff report notes.

Council approved the roof replacements in June.

Construction notices and service disruptions will be posted before the work starts. The gallery and sports centre will continue to operate.
