What's Open and Closed on Family Day in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Clarington

Family Day falls on Monday, February 20, 2023 in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Clarington and Durham Region. Family Day is not a national statutory holiday, but it is observed in Ontario as one.

There are still plenty of things to do, with a special focus on family.

Activities include free skating and swimming in several communities (including Oshawa, Clarington and Pickering), as well as Family Day on the Farm in Clarington (Pingles), Winterfest in Ajax, Artefact Explosion at the Oshawa Museum and tours of the Canadian Automotive Museum and even snowshoeing at Enniskillen Conservation Area.

Open:

  • Most Shoppers Drug Mart locations
  • Most restaurants that are usually open on Mondays will be open but call ahead to be sure
  • Canada Post (mail pick-up and delivery will not be affected by the holiday)
  • Federal Government offices (most services can be delivered online; offices are open by-appointment-only)
  • McLean Community Centre Library in Ajax
  • Recreation centres in Ajax (McLean Community Centre, Audley Recreation Centre) for public skating and swimming; Oshawa (Delpark Centre and South Oshawa Community Centre for leisure bookings and Children’s Arena for floor rentals) and Whitby (Iroquois Park) for public skating from Noon to 2 pm
  • Some cannabis stores, but call ahead to be sure
  • Some breweries will be open but vall ahead to be sure

Closed:

  • Major malls like Pickering Town Centre and Oshawa Centre, though restaurants with outdoor entrances may be open
  • Most major grocery stores
  • LCBO
  • Beer Store
  • Banks
  • City Halls and provincial government offices
  • Outdoor skating at Durham’s numerous natural ice rinks is closed due to the recent bout of warm weather

Transit

  • Durham Region Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule
  • GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule

Garbage:

  • No garbage pick-up (all waste collection will be one day later than usual)
  • Waste depots will be closed Monday will be closed Monday
