A weather warning is in effect with total rainfall amounts up to 35 mm in some areas of southern Ontario, including Mississauga, Brampton, Milton and Halton Hills.

The rainy weather expected for New Year’s Eve weekend just got a bit wetter for some areas. Environment Canada issued rainfall warnings and alerts this afternoon (Dec. 30) for parts of southern Ontario.

The province already issued a flood watch.

Rainfall warning for Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Halton Hills and Milton:

Rain, heavy at times is expected with total rainfall amounts of 20 to 35 mm starting tonight (Dec. 30) through to Saturday evening.

Special weather statement in effect for Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Niagara Falls, Welland, St. Catharines and Grimsby:

Rain, heavy at times is expected with total rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm. Periods of rain will continue tonight and become heavy at times through Saturday. Rainfall amounts of 25 mm are possible over a few locations. Rain is expected to come to an end Saturday evening.

Rainfall warning in effect for Durham Region (including Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering and Ajax):

Periods of rain will continue tonight and become heavy at times through Saturday. Rainfall amounts 20 mm to 35 mm are possible over a few locations. Rain is expected to come to an end Saturday evening.

The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall, Environment Canada warned.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks.
