Thunderstorms expected today with warm temperatures in southern Ontario

Looks like it’s going to be another day of warm spring temperatures and heavy rain for southern Ontario.

After a mostly grey and damp week, Saturday brought more cloudy skies with damaging winds that reached speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Residents in Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, and Durham can expect to start their day with mainly cloudy skies and a 30 per cent chance of heavy rain.

A thunderstorm in late morning may bring 10 to 15 mm of rain to the cities, but it is uncertain whether the showers will persist throughout the day or taper off by the afternoon.

Hamilton will be predominantly cloudy with a 70 per cent chance of morning rain, potentially turning into a thunderstorm. Later in the day, there’s a 30 per cent chance of rain returning with winds expected to gust at 40 km/h in the morning, decreasing to 20 km/h by the afternoon.

Environment Canada predicts warm daytime temperatures which will fluctuate between the different regions.

Hamilton will lead with temperatures soaring to 17 C, followed by Halton at 16 C. Meanwhile, Mississauga and Brampton are set to reach 14 C, with Durham experiencing the coolest weather at 13 C.

Additionally, the UV index is expected to hit a moderate level five for all regions. Environment Canada advises protecting your skin when the UV Index is three or higher, especially from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., even if it’s cloudy.

Health Canada says that if outdoors, individuals should seek shade, wear protective clothing and hats, apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, avoid tanning, and use UV-protective sunglasses.

Closer to the evening, temperatures in Mississauga and Brampton will fall to 5 C while Hamilton, Halton, and Durham will experience a slight dip to 4 C.

Additionally, the skies will become cloudy with foggy patches anticipated to develop by midnight and possibly carry through the evening.

Rainy days will hit pause on Monday and Tuesday, bringing crystal clear skies. Temperatures are forecasted to hover between 15 C and 17 C.

With pleasant weather heading to southern Ontario, it’s a prime opportunity to enjoy some fresh air outdoors before overcast skies and rain showers set in on Wednesday and continue through the weekend.
