Brampton will be cheering on some hometown heroes with a viewing party downtown as Canada takes on Ireland at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With several Olympic medals under their belts, Brampton’s Kadeisha Buchanan and Caledon’s Ashley Lawrence are just a few of the Ontario players competing against the world for the month-long tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

The Canadians will face off against Ireland on Wednesday (July 26), and the City of Brampton is getting in on the action with viewing parties in Garden Square.

Residents and guests are invited to take in the game and cheer on Buchanan, Lawrence, and the rest of the Canadian team as they look to improve over a 0-0 draw against Nigeria last week.

The seventh-ranked Canadians outshot Nigeria 15-10 (3-1 in shots on target) in their match and dominated possession in the early going, but couldn’t convert good chances into goals.

Buchanan was named Canada’s best soccer player in 2020, and both Buchanan and Lawrence won gold with Canada at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The pair were also given some hometown love in 2021 when Brampton named fields after both players.

The Canada-Ireland match gets started bright and early at 8:00 a.m. The team will play their third match on Monday against Australia at 6:00 a.m.
