Warm weather the grinch as outdoor skating in Oshawa shut down for the season

It was unseasonably warm weather that delayed the opening of Oshawa’s two outdoor skating rinks until January 20 and it was Mother Nature who shut it down for the season on March 1.
For those who like to feel the icy shards of winter wind while they glide on outdoor ice surfaces, it was good while it lasted.
The melting ice at the outdoor rinks at Delpark Centre in the north end and Stone Street Park within shouting distance of Lake Ontario in the south were pretty good indications but the City made it official Friday with this message on its website: “Due to unseasonably warm weather, the natural outdoor ice rinks at Delpark Homes Centre and Stone Street Park will remain closed for the remainder of the winter season.”
Skaters had it a bit better this year than the 2022-23 season, when the outdoor skating season was cancelled February 3. The first season at Delpark lasted just 24 days but was an instant hit with 218 skaters per day using the rink
On the bright side, there plenty of free skating opportunities this week and into the March Break in Oshawa, with free skates at Donevan Recreation Centre on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. and on Friday, March 8 from 9 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., 10 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., 2 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.
Harmon Park Arena is also having a free skate March 8 from 6 p.m. to 7:50 p.m.
