A police helicopter and a K-9 unit tracked down the driver of a car that went off the road in Pickering last weekend.

Durham Police received reports of the car crash around 2 a.m. on April 19. Reports indicate the car left the road and crashed into the ditch. The driver was allegedly seen fleeing the crash site and hiding in neighbourhood backyards.

Officers combed the area trying to find the driver. They bought in the Air 1 police chopper to scour the area. The chopper discovered a man matching the driver’s description near the dead end on Falconwood Way. The neighbourhood is a residential cul-de-sac halfway between Whites and Dixie Roads just north of Highway 401.

The suspect was walking through a wooded backyard toward Appleview Road. The helicopter continued to track the man as officers responded to the home. It recorded the man crouched behind a trampoline before he took off toward the south.

He then jumped the fence between houses as a police officer sprinted toward him. He began to run back toward the woods and fell face-first at the tree line.

“He just fell over something so be careful,” the officer in the helicopter reported to the ground, “He’s running now west trying to hold up his pants.”

After a brief chase through the forest, the officers arrested the man. They report he showed signs he had been drinking and was impaired.

As a result, the 26-year-old from Pickering was charged with failure to remain, impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol level over 80 milligrams in 100 millilitres (the legal limit). According to police, the man tested at 150 mg and 160 mg following his arrest.
