Police have released a video that shows a hit-and-run driver briefly stop and then flee the scene as a man lays dying on a busy Mississauga road in the aftermath.

Major Collision Bureau investigators with Peel Regional Police hope the video (see below) will help them track down the person who was driving the car that struck and killed Jim White, 58, of Mississauga, as he walked across Dundas Street West in the city’s west end late at night on Friday, Aug. 18.

Police have appealed to the public for help several times in efforts to locate the person who was behind the wheel of the damaged dark-coloured 2014-2016 four-door Toyota Corolla that sped away from the scene near Westdale Mall just seconds after the 11 p.m. collision.

White, who was crossing the busy street mid-block east of The Credit Woodlands, was rushed to hospital, where he died just over two weeks later on Sept. 4.

At a police press conference held Sept. 21 at the scene of the collision, family members of White appealed to the driver to come forward.

In a news release this afternoon, police once again appealed for witnesses or additional video footage of the incident. They’re also specifically looking to speak with anyone who works or worked at a car repair shop that may have information about the driver or the damaged vehicle.

Police say the car would have had visible damage to the windshield, the driver’s side front fender and the driver’s side front wheel well cover (over tire).

Anyone with information is urged to call police at 905-453–2121, ext. 3710, or call Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

At the earlier news conference, Peel police Detective Const. Taylor Halfyard said the driver remained at the scene briefly, but then drove away leaving White lying in the road.

A second vehicle then hit the man. The driver of that vehicle remained on scene, Halfyard said.

Jim White, 58, died in hospital of injuries from a hit-and-run crash.

Fighting back tears at the Sept. 21 news conference, Bill White spoke to reporters not far from where his son was hit. He wondered why the driver didn’t stop.

“I just don’t understand why (the driver) wouldn’t have stopped if Jim had stepped out in front of him; it was an accident,” he said.

Jim White had diabetes and was unable to continue working at a bottling plant near the airport, his father said. He didn’t have children, but a young woman who he considered a daughter was helping the family.
