Hamilton shooting

Hamilton Police have released video footage of the daylight shooting downtown that sent an innocent bystander to hospital.

Gunfire erupted in a busy area near King Street East and East Avenue North shortly before noon on May 6. The area is full of apartments, stores and restaurants.

A man in his 50s was grazed by a stray bullet. He required hospital treatment. However, his injuries were not life-threatening. He’s since been released.

A grey four-door BMW sedan was seen leaving the area. It was last seen heading down King William Street from Victoria Avenue North. Police confirmed they recovered the BMW on May 8.

They also confirmed their belief one armed man fired at another. They do not believe the target returned fire.

The first, and the BMW driver, is described as a white man wearing a black hoodie, black pants and white running shoes. He was armed with a black gun and is the alleged shooter

The second suspect is described as a white man wearing white shorts and a white hoodie.

Investigators said they are unsure how the two suspects are connected. They have not determined the motive behind the shooting, though it remains a central part of the investigation.

They also released video of the shooting. It shows a hooded man emerge from the BMW, amid pedestrians, and open fire toward the back of his car.

He then took cover behind the car, seemingly expecting return fire. A woman walking toward the car then opens the driver door for him. She then runs to the other side and gets in the front passenger seat.

Police are trying to talk with any witnesses to the shooting, but none have yet come forward.

“Hamilton Police are asking residents in the area to review their security surveillance cameras between the hours of 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for any suspicious activity and to contact police,” they wrote.

“Detectives are also asking if you were driving in the area and have dash camera footage that would be suitable for review to please contact the investigators.”
