A video circulating on social media shows drivers cutting across a grassy median to get on Hwy. 401 and avoid a traffic jam.
The video, first posted on oxtailpapi’s TikTok account, shows drivers avoiding a traffic backup to get on Hwy. 401 from Brampton.
“I don’t know what happened but I don’t know if I am that desperate to cut across the bush,” says the person filming. “This is crazy.”
The video pans back a forth as more and more drivers head down a hill and get on the highway.
“Should I do that?” the person asks.
Another video shows him driving past the cutoff. He says the delay was only about 10 to 18 minutes.
“People were just impatient,” he adds.
The video comes with a warning: “Participating in this activity could result in you or others getting hurt.”
Several people on Twitter asked why the police weren’t there.
“And @OPP_GTATraffic was not there to intercept those bad drivers?” one person asked.
But by the looks of the well-worn track through the grass, this isn’t the first time drivers have used this shortcut.
“That’s a pretty well worn trail. This isn’t a new thing,” one person noted on Twitter.
Other people noted how busy the highway is and maybe this is to be expected.
“no surprise by what you see on the 401. It’s the busiest highway/freeway in North America,” one person wrote.
“UNPOPULAR TAKE: The GTA has some of the most unreasonable commute times on the planet. Behaviours like these are inevitable,” another person said.
