fatal fire update brampton

Police and fire officials will provide an update on a deadly Brampton fire on Monday.

Emergency crews responded to the fire in a semi-detached home on Banas Way in the McLaughlin Road and Remembrance Road area of the city around 2:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20.

The two adults were found dead at the scene— one just outside the home and another just inside the residence.

Investigators found the remains of another adult on Friday.

Three adults and one child were transported to hospital in critical condition. In the latest update, police said one man’s condition had worsened, and he was in critical condition, while the three other people were considered stable.

As of Friday, two people were unaccounted for — one of those still unaccounted for was believed to be a child.

The partially collapsed house was too unsafe to enter and had to be excavated to facilitate the search and investigation.

In all, 11 people were said to be living in the house—nine family members and two people in a secondary basement unit. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said the landlord, who lives outside the country, had submitted a building permit application to create a second dwelling in the basement, but building officials were turned away several times when they went to inspect the finished work.

Peel Regional Police, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal are scheduled to hold a joint update on Monday, Nov. 24, at noon.
