Unborn baby and toddler among victims in fatal house fire in Brampton, investigators say

Update: In an update around 11 a.m., police said three people were unaccounted for in the fire.

One of the three missing people is believed to be a child.

Acting Sgt. Tyler Bell-Morena told reporters that a significant collapse in the home has prevented a thorough search. An excavation company is expected to come in and stabilize the structure.

Original story follows.

Two adults have died and three adults and one child were critically injured in a Brampton house fire early Thursday morning.

Earlier in the morning, Brampton Fire Chief Andy Glynn told reporters at least one resident is unaccounted for.

The fire broke out at a home in the McLaughlin Road and Remembrance Road area of the city around 2:15 a.m., Brampton Fire and Emergency Services said. Reports indicate the semi-detached home is on Banas Way.

The two adults were found dead at the scene— one just outside the home and another just inside the residence, Glynn said.

The three adults and one child were transported to hospital in critical condition, Peel Regional Police said.

Police are trying to locate people unaccounted for in the fire, and there have been “varying reports” on how many people are outstanding, Peel Regional Police acting Sgt. Tyler Bell-Morena told reporters.

It’s not clear if the home was a single-family home or contained multiple units, Bell-Morena said.

When crews arrived, flames were through the roof, and the fire caused significant structural damage to the home, Glynn said. Parts of the home had started to collapse, he said.

The structural damage prevented crews from fully accessing the entire home, Glynn added.

Two neighbouring homes were also damaged, but residents were able to escape safely, officials said.

Multiple homes were evacuated, police said.

The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal will investigate the cause of the fire, Bell-Morena said.

Emergency crews will remain on scene throughout the day and people are asked to avoid the area.
