Burlington boaters who were hoping for a quick resolution to the insurance issues plaguing the LaSalle Park Marina will have to wait a little longer.

At a committee meeting today (May 5), the mayor and city councillors heard from several delegations asking for help to open the marina as the boating season rapidly approaches.

Earlier this year, the marina’s insurance provider refused to renew their coverage and despite the help of multiple brokers, no other insurance carrier has been found.

The delegates in favour of the city coming to the marina’s aid pointed out the lack of other opportunities for area boaters to dock their vessels as well as the numerous community opportunities that will be missed if the marina remains closed.

The main option the city is considering would see operation of the marina fall under the city’s general insurance coverage, at least for this year.

Councillors, specifically Ward 6’s Angelo Bentivegna, however, are concerned about any impact to Burlington taxpayers.

“We need to make sure this wouldn’t impact taxpayers as well as not draw on any reserves,” he said during discussions.

The marina is hoping to open May 19, but council feels like that’s overly-optimistic, with a mid-June target being more realistic.

City staff are aiming to bring information about various options and costs to council over the next couple of weeks.
