A Hamilton police officer was investigating a collision today between a truck and a vehicle when he ended up getting dragged by another car in a separate incident.

The officer sought medical attention and sustained minor injuries.

A 29-year-old Hamilton man was arrested and charged with assaulting police, dangerous operation of a vehicle, fleeing police and failing to remain on the scene.

The officer was dispatched shortly before noon today (June 7) to the Red Hill Valley Parkway to investigate a collision on the parkway’s southbound lanes, where a vehicle had rear-ended a truck. While conducting that investigation, the officer noticed another vehicle driving “erratically” so he approached the driver.

That driver rolled up his window and tried to flee by driving away as the officer attempted to arrest him, resulting in the officer getting his arms caught inside the car, said Hamilton police spokesperson Indy Bharaj in a phone interview with inthehammer.com today (June 7).

“The officer was dragged some distance,” Bharaj said, noting the timeline was uncertain.

There were no injuries in the initial incident involving the collision, but the officer suffered “minor bumps, bruises and scrapes” in the second incident.

Police completed that investigation just after 2 p.m. and roadways have opened.

However, the collision investigation is ongoing and Bharaj said it was unclear if there were charges in that first incident.
