Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement as “significant rainfall is expected” to continue in southern Ontario.

Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 45 millimetres are expected in parts of southern Ontario including Brampton, Mississauga, Halton Region and Durham Region today (April 11) and tomorrow, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Up to 50 mm of rain could fall in Hamilton.

The rain, which has already been heavy today, is expected to continue through tonight and finally taper into showers on Friday morning, Environment Canada said in the special weather statement.

A risk of thunderstorms will develop this afternoon into tonight.

For areas that receive thunderstorms, rainfall amounts may approach 50 mm locally by Friday morning.

Northwesterly winds will intensify in behind the system late Friday afternoon into Friday night with gusts up to 80 km/h.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads, Environment Canada warns. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
