A trio of 905 universities have cracked a Top 50 list for research schools in Canada, with McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario Tech University in Oshawa and Brock University in St. Catharines each making the top three in specific categories.

McMaster, ranked eighth overall among Canada’s research universities, finished second among all medical schools behind only the University of Toronto (also the number one overall research university) and was ranked third in the ‘bang for your buck’ category, also known as research based on total research income.

Queen’s University and Memorial University (St. John’s, NFLD) finished one-two in that category,

Ontario Tech, meanwhile, finished 38th in the overall rankings for research but in the Research University of the Year category (Undergraduates) the school finished top three, behind only the Universitie of Quebec a Rimouski and the University of Regina.

The rankings were based on “superior performance” on key measurements of research success.

Brock University, number 40 on the overall list, topped the Corporate Research Income Growth category for undergraduate schools.

The annual findings are compiled by Research Infosource Inc., a research, consulting and publishing firm based in Toronto.
