Two homes in downtown Burlington have been designated for heritage protection.

Both homes on Brant Street have features that the City of Burlington has determined merit preservation.

The designated homes are 620 Brant Street and 574 Brant Street.

The heritage label can be given without the property owner’s permission who must apply to the city if there are plans to alter or demolish the structure. The designation and any ruling by the city can be appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT).

Owners of both properties have objected to the designation but have not yet indicated if they will appeal to the OLT.

A Burlington planning department report indicates the two homes have heritage value because they were designed in an architectural style representative of the early 20th-century development patterns that characterized Brant Street.

The report says that 620 Brant Street is notable as a “representative example of the foursquare architectural style, a subcategory of Edwardian Classical. It features a symmetrical front façade and a front porch with river stone pillars. Both 574 and 620 Brant Street have contextual value as examples of a relatively small number of historic residential buildings that survive on Brant Street.”
