Vaccinated travellers who arrive on flights at Pearson Airport in Mississauga will soon no longer have to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test, the federal government announced today (March 17).

The end to pre-arrival testing for the virus takes effect on April 1.

Currently, travellers arriving at Pearson and other airports in Canada must present proof of a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 24 hours of their flight.

Mississauga Centre MP and Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, who was joined by Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and Tourism Minister Randy Boissonnault in announcing the amended rules, said the continued easing of travel restrictions is possible thanks to the millions of Canadians who rolled up their sleeves and got vaccinated.

The move comes as Canadian travel and tourism industry officials and Toronto business leaders have been pushing Ottawa to eliminate the remaining travel restrictions in place for vaccinated travellers at Pearson Airport.

It also comes as the COVID-19 situation in Canada has been improving the past month or so. However, the World Health Organization says case rates have begun to slowly climb once again in various parts of the world.

Post-April 1, travellers at Pearson will still have to use the ArriveCan app before entering the country and will remain subject to random testing for the virus.
