The GO train track surfacing program kicks off on the Lakeshore East corridor right after Easter, with Metrolinx breaking out their high production DynaCAT track surfacing machine to keep the tracks properly profiled to allow the trains to travel at optimum speeds.

The work will be done over a three-week period from April 2-24, with the track from the Oshawa GO Station to Durham Junction (west of Pickering GO Station) getting the TLC treatment.

Fluctuating temperatures, exposure to extreme weather and dozens of heavy trains rolling over the tracks every day can alter their geometry and cause a bumpier ride for passengers. Untreated for an extended period, these imperfections in the track may require trains to reduce speeds through sections of track, potentially causing delays.

As part of its annual track maintenance, Metrolinx surfaces tracks across its rail corridors to correct these defects. Regular maintenance lets the trains go at the right speeds while keeping the ride smooth and comfortable for commuters.

The Metrolinx-owned Plasser DynaCAT 09-2X integrates the work traditionally performed by two machines – a tamper and a dynamic stabilizer – into one. This allows track surfacing to be completed more efficiently, which minimizes the work time required and ultimately produces a higher quality final product, reducing maintenance costs in the long run.

DynaCAT equipment will be staying within the Metrolinx right-of-way with overnight work planned. The work is expected to create additional levels of noise and vibrations when the equipment is passing, with Metrolinx working to ensure impacts are as minimal as possible.

Crews will be on site between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day. The equipment will be running from midnight and 4:30 a.m. each shift.
